Defending

Defending Basics

So you get attacked by the Robber Barons every time you log in.
Here is what to do: Defending Basics

Just Starting (up to level 30 or so)

The default setting (25-50-25) works, sometimes. It is a gamble. The bet is that your attacker doesn't know what he is doing, which will be true most of the time. But since it is the default they learn to beat it. So…
If you have lots of troops and tools, I would suggest you put half on one wall and the other half in the center.
The other decent play at this stage of the game is to load everything in the center. Again, counting on bad attacks coming in. Or load up both walls. There are good arguments for each of these.
But there is no substitute for being lucky and online to set the perfect defense.
And at this stage of the game, the person who understands how to use tools wins every time.
Read how to set a defense, if you have not set one before.

Middle Game (up past level 30 or so)

Set your defense to one wall or the other. Load up at least four of the best tools you can in each slot.
Use wall and moat tools. I suggest you forget about the range tools and dummy troops.
This gives you not only the best chance of winning, but it saves the troops of those who support you.
Read about the courtyard bonus if you want to know why.

If you are online for the attack, use the defense calculator and change things accordingly.
After the dust settles, remember to set the one wall defense and tools back.

When you see an attack coming at you:
1. Move everything out except defenders. Send the attack troops to support someone, or attack a distant RBC. Just get them out. If they stay, and the battle makes it to the yard, they are gone forever. Just extra glory for your attacker.
2. Move in more defenders, if you can. Ask your alliance for support if you think you need it.
3. When you see the attack details, use the defense calculator to find the settings you should use. If there is not enough time, just remember to match range with range and melee with melee. Make your best guess.
4. If you have extra time, check the castellan equipment and make it the best you can. Even if only temporary.

End Game

Will let you know, if and when I ever get there. Suggestions are welcome.
